You may have been riding your bicycle to or from work when a driver of a car failed to see you and pulled out of a parking lot or made a turn into you. Suddenly, you find yourself on the hood of a car or on the hard ground. During this time, you will have adrenaline pumping through your body. Although you might be shaken up, you might not feel the extent of your injuries due to the adrenaline rush you are experiencing. For this reason, it is critical that you know what to do after a bicycle accident with a car, including:

  • Notify the police. If a police officer shows up at the accident scene, make sure you give the officer a statement of what happened and get a copy of the police report.
  • Exchange information with the driver. Make sure you get the make, model, and license plate number off the car. Also, get the driver’s insurance information, contact information, and driver’s license number.
  • Take pictures. Use your cell phone to capture the damage done to your bicycle and the vehicle involved.
  • Talk to witnesses. If there are witnesses present, ask them if they saw what happened and if they would give their statement to the officer or allow you to get their contact information.
  • Get medical attention. Even if you are only experiencing minor aches and pains, you should go to the emergency room or make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.
  • Speak with an attorney. The accident scene might need to be investigated, and an attorney will know what to do and how to help you communicate with your insurance company.
