Motor vehicle crashes occur every day around our city and throughout the nation. However, just because wrecks happen daily does not mean that you have experienced one before—especially if your accident involved a large truck. If you have never been in an accident with a truck, you need to learn about the process and some things an insurance adjuster will say that might raise some red flags.

While victims of trucking accidents may want to trust the words coming out of an insurance adjuster’s mouth, it is important that victims understand that insurance adjusters have one job to do and that is to save their company as much money as possible. This means that insurance adjusters are not on your side—even if they seem sympathetic and treat you nicely.

Some Words an Adjuster May Say That Should Make You Think Twice

If you get a call from an insurance adjuster, you should be very suspicious if he says any of the following:

  • I need to get a recorded statement of the events. Adjusters have been trained to get recorded statements so they can use your words against you.
  • I’ll be sending some papers in the mail for you to sign. Adjusters want you to sign medical release forms so they can go on a fishing expedition to see if you have prior injuries that will limit their liability.
  • This is the best offer we can provide to you. Insurance adjusters never provide their best offer at the beginning. When lawyers get involved, the offers tend to increase exponentially.
  • We can work this out without getting a lawyer involved. The insurance adjuster will attempt to make you think that you don’t need an attorney or that the insurance company won’t increase your settlement if you get an attorney involved.

When an insurance adjuster says the aforementioned things to you following a truck crash, it should raise some red flags and make you concerned.
