A fatal pedestrian accident in Siesta Key took place on Wednesday, January 22, 2014. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the fatal crash occurred on Midnight Pass Road on the south end of Siesta Key just north of Turtle Beach.
This deadly accident actually took place in the parking lot at 8730 Midnight Pass Road just before 9:30 a.m. According to reports by the FHP, the pedestrian who was struck and killed was a 78-year-old woman.
Maria Fernandez, a 35-year-old driver, of Sarasota, told police that she was stopped in a parking space in the parking lot with her car facing east when she accidentally pressed the gas pedal. This made her 2003 Toyota Rav 4 SUV lurch out of the parking lot, drive over the bushes and across the sidewalk, striking the pedestrian who was walking on the west sidewalk in front of the Tortuga Club at 8750 Midnight Pass Road. The SUV came to a stop when it reached the east shoulder of the road.
The 78-year-old pedestrian was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead. She has been identified as Carol Goodwin.
Midnight Pass Road was closed for some time due to an accident investigation of this fatal crash. Following the investigation, an FHP press release reported that Maria Fernandez has been charged at this time with Driving Without a License and Causing Death or Serious Bodily Injuries.
Mallard Perez is deeply saddened to hear of this fatal crash and would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Carol Goodwin.
