Motorcycle accidents can occur at any time of the year. According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report on vehicle safety, riding a motorcycle is one of the more dangerous means of transportation. In fact, motorcycle riders are five times more likely to get injured in a crash than someone who drives a car. Additionally, motorcyclists are 30 times more likely to die in an accident than passengers in cars during traffic accidents.
It may seem like there are more motorcycle crashes in the winter in Florida because not many other states have nice enough weather that allows motorcyclists to continue riding during the winter months. However, last year the numbers indicated that more motorcycle crashes in Florida occurred during the month of March than at any other month during the year, according to Chanyoung Lee, a senior researcher at the University of South Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation Research.
While statistics don’t show a surge in winter-time motorcycle accidents, one of the reasons that car and motorcycle crashes during the winter occur is due to snowbirds. People who flock to South Florida from up north are not used to watching out for motorcyclists. Often they are elderly people who aren’t looking out for motorcycles or have failing vision.
