Daily walkers, tourists, and people out for a stroll, often find themselves in harm’s way due to drivers’ negligence, aggression, and carelessness. In fact, pedestrians in Florida and nationwide need to be on alert every step they take—even when they are following traffic signals and crossing at a crosswalk. This is because of the many drivers who run red lights.
Shockingly, millions of drivers run red lights every year. Unfortunately, this behavior has led to intersection accidents, causing serious injuries and fatalities for motorists and pedestrians alike. Now a new report reveals a trend in red-light running that pedestrians should pay special attention to. The Safer Roads Report 2014: Trends in Red-Light Running from the National Coalition for Safer Roads reveals the following:
- Red-light running occurs more often on Fridays.
- The fewest red-light running violations occurred on Sundays.
- Drivers are more likely to run red lights between the hours of 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Red-light running is at a high over Memorial Day weekend.
How Does This Report Affect Pedestrians in Sarasota?
Pedestrians should have this information to make informed decisions about when they will go walking. For example, the information in this study reveals that a pedestrian has a higher risk for being hit by a red-light runner on a Friday afternoon. As a result of this information, pedestrians can reduce the chance of being hit by a red-light runner by avoiding walking across intersections between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Fridays.
