Many employers in the Sarasota area own vans due to the nature of their business. Additionally, churches and schools in Florida often have vans they use to transport their kids to camp or their sports teams to another school. As you can see, there are many needs for 15-passenger vans. However, those who drive vans or ride in vans may be at risk for crashing.

According to a new study from AXA Business Insurance, van drivers are at more risk than other drivers on the road. The study looked at crash reports from 2008 to 2012 to determine a van’s crash risk. Shockingly, research shows that van drivers are 142 percent more likely to crash when reversing, and that parked vans have a 40 percent higher crash target. Unfortunately, people who drive vans or ride in vans are at a greater risk for being in a crash.

There are many causes of van crashes including:

  • Fatigue
  • Distracted driving
  • Tire blowout
  • Failure to maintain the van
  • Inexperienced drivers
  • Poor placement of cargo

When vans aren’t serviced properly, tires aren’t replaced in a timely manner, tires aren’t the proper size, cargo isn’t loaded correctly and is unbalanced, or drivers aren’t familiar with how large vehicles handle, drivers may lose control of a van and crash. When vans wreck, they are more likely to rollover due to their higher center of gravity. Unfortunately, rollover accidents can produce serious and even catastrophic injuries.
