A Tampa woman was critically injured in a rear-end crash on Sheldon Road near Waters Avenue on Tuesday, August 27, 2013. Reportedly, 48-year-old Caridad Chamizo was driving her 2001 Ford Explorer south on Sheldon Road, just before 8 a.m. during the morning commute, when this Tampa car crash occurred.

Authorities indicated that Chamizo’s vehicle was hit from behind by a 2001 Toyota Corolla, driven by 22-year-old Luis Arroyo, of Tampa. The force of the collision caused the Explorer SUV to overturn and come to a rest on its roof in the middle of the road, closing southbound lanes of Sheldon Road for about three hours.

Chamizo was found to be in critical condition and was immediately transported to an area hospital for medical care. Sadly, she died a day later of the injuries she sustained in the crash. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Cristal Bermudez Nunez announced the sad news on Thursday morning, August 29, 2013.

Due to suspicions, authorities asked Arroyo for a blood test—to test for the presence of alcohol or drugs in his system. Arroyo agreed to a voluntary blood draw to test for alcohol or drugs, but authorities indicated that alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in this fatal accident. Arroyo has not been charged for this wreck at this time, but deputies indicate that an investigation into this crash is still ongoing.

Mallard Perez is saddened to hear of this tragic Tampa crash and extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Caridad Chamizo.
