A Sarasota citizen was struck by a car and killed while she was mowing grass. According to reports, a female was trimming grass that was overgrown in the median, causing the Sarasota County Government to ask residents not to mow grass in right-of-ways.

Andrea Rody decided she was going to cut the overgrown grass in the median of Mauna Loa Boulevard, which is near her Sarasota home. The grass had been neglected by a county contractor for about two months, and it was about 2-feet high. Her friends and neighbors told officials that she was proud of her neighborhood and took pride in keeping it attractive.

As she was mowing the grass Monday morning, she was struck by a car driven by Samantha Lax. Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and what the driver was doing right before she hit Rody. According to Sarasota County Clerk records, Lax has two traffic tickets in Sarasota County – one in 2009 and another in 2010.

Rody was critically injured in this Sarasota car accident and taken to St. Petersburg hospital, where she later died of her injuries. According to police, charges are pending against the driver involved.

County officials told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune that Rody complained about the neglected grass to a county worker 90 minutes prior to the accident, and he returned to tell her that the median had been approved for mowing Tuesday.

In light of what happened, Sarasota County Government is taking this sad situation and reminding other residents to not mow grass in road medians for their own safety. The county issued a statement urging residents to contact the county about mowing concerns and the appearance of the roadways in their neighborhoods. The number is 941-861-5000 and the county mowing schedule is located at www.scgov.net .

Our Sarasota personal injury lawyers at Mallard Perez extend their deepest condolences to the family, friends, and neighbors of Andrea Rody.
