In a recent report, Florida ranked as one of the top four highest states for red-light running during the July 4th travel period. In 2011, the four states that ranked as riskiest for red-light running, in descending order, were California, Florida, Maryland, and Texas, according to the National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR).
NCSR’s Safer Roads Report 2012: Trends in Red-Light Running was recently released and ranks the most dangerous holiday periods for red-light running so that motorists can be aware of intersection risks.
The recent holiday that just passed—the Fourth of July—ranks second after Memorial Day as the most dangerous holiday for intersection safety. However, the report revealed that the 2011 July Fourth holiday travel period was the highest holiday travel period for red-light running in Florida and the other three previously mentioned states. During this holiday alone, there were more than 25,000 red-light running violations in this nation.
For Florida, the July 4th travel holiday period saw a 39 percent increase in red-light violations as compared with the holiday travel period that had the lowest number of red-light violations, Christmas.
With the approaching Labor Day holiday, NCSR and other traffic and safety organizations are urging drivers to be extra careful on the roads during highly traveled holiday periods. “Statistics about red-light running and overall intersection safety make this fact more tangible and heighten awareness about the risks that dangerous drivers create for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,” said David Kelly, president and executive director of NCSR.
