John Michael Robinson was involved in a motorcycle accident near Bunnel on U.S. 1. According to the Highway Patrol report, he was taken to Florida Hospital in Flagler and later died from his injuries.
The report states that the accident was a single vehicle collision. Robinson was driving north on U.S. 1 in the left lane when he drifted onto the grass median. When he tried to drive back onto the road, he over-corrected. He was ejected from the motorcycle when it overturned and landed in the median.
Robinson was a teacher at Wyotech technical school.
His death marked one of several motorcycle deaths in and near St. Johns County in the past couple of months. The Florida Highway Patrol reported two other motorcycle fatalities in Flagler County in the past several weeks.
John Melvin, of Bunnell was involved in a motorcycle accident on Labor Day. He was pronounced dead after his motorcycle slid into a line of trees.
Another fatal motorcycle accident claimed the life of Pedro Rieva, of Palm Coast. He was driving his Harley Davidson eastbound on Whiteview Parkway when his motorcycle collided with a car, and he was ejected. He later dies.
St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Terry Shirley rides a motorcycle as a traffic enforcement deputy. In the 20 years that he has been in law enforcement, he says he has dealt with 100 or more motorcycle crashes. He says the common factors include improper braking and other drivers not seeing motorcycles.
Shirley says that driving a motorcycle is a “perishable skill” and that riders should take regular courses to keep their skills sharp.
