On Friday, September 6, 2013, a Port Charlotte woman died in a Sarasota County crash on I-75. This fatal accident involved two vehicles in the northbound lanes of the interstate, and occurred around 1:05 p.m. on Friday afternoon. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the deadly crash took place along the River Road overpass at mile marker 191 on I-75. The northbound lanes of traffic were closed for hours as a result.
Police said that the Port Charlotte woman was driving a 2000 Ford Explorer SUV in the right lane of I-75 when the driver of a 2005 Honda Odyssey minivan changed lanes and collided into the SUV. According to the news release from the Florida Highway Patrol, the minivan was in the center lane and switched to the right lane, striking the rear end of the SUV. Unfortunately, the minivan driver failed to see the SUV and clipped the rear of the SUV.
Upon impact, the driver of the SUV lost control of her vehicle, causing it to overturn. Although the driver was wearing a seat belt, authorities indicated that she died of her injuries in the wreck. She has been identified as 56-year-old Sally Brock.
Elani Caglioti, the 47-year-old minivan driver of Ft. Myers, brought her vehicle to a stop in the right emergency lane. She did not report any injuries in the crash, and she currently has been charged with careless driving.
Traffic was rerouted, and the lanes were eventually reopened around 5:45 p.m.
