According to the Guardian ad Litem website,

“The Florida Guardian ad Litem Program is a partnership of community advocates and professional staff providing a powerful voice on behalf of Florida's abused and neglected children.”

In other words, a Guardian ad Litem is someone who protects the interest of the minor child or someone who has been declared mentally incompetent.

A Guardian ad Litem is expected to investigate the situation. In other words they will look into relevant family history, the environment the child is living in, as well as the relationships the child is involved in.

They investigate by interviewing everyone necessary within the child’s life.

A Guardian ad Litem also informs the child and family of resources available to them. The needs of the child are of utmost importance; therefore, a working relationship between everyone involved in the case is imperative.

The last thing a Guardian ad Litem will do in a case is to make sure that the orders of the courts are followed through correctly.
