On April 19, 2012, a fatal Sarasota crash occurred that claimed the life of a male cement mixer driver.  According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Sarasota man was killed when his 2007 cement mixer truck flipped over after colliding with another vehicle.

The Florida Highway Patrol indicated that the Sarasota accident took place on U.S. 301, near the outlet mall, east of the Interstate 75 exit ramp, around 9 a.m. on Thursday morning. The cement mixer driver was traveling north on U.S. 301 in the right lane when the accident occurred.

Jerry Wayne Hart, 52, the cement mixer driver, failed to stop for a traffic light and hit a Mazda Miata.  Malcolm Eugene Bois, 59, the Miata driver, of Palmetto, was waiting in his car at a traffic light when he was hit.  Hart attempted to veer to the right to avoid hitting the Miata, but ended up rear-ending the Miata and sending it out into the intersection.

Upon impact, the cement truck spun out of control and turned over onto its roof, after hitting a palm tree, fence, concrete pole and traffic control box. The roof crumpled and Hart was trapped inside. Hart suffered life threatening injuries and died at the accident scene. It took rescue workers two hours to remove his body from the wreckage.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Miata driver sustained minor injuries in this crash.

Authorities are still investigating this crash in Ellenton that claimed the life of this cement mixer driver.
