On Friday, June 1, 2012, a 26-year-old man died while driving his scooter.  According to authorities, the fatal Dunedin scooter crash occurred Friday night on Bayshore Boulevard, just across from the Dunedin Country Club. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office indicated it was a head-on crash that took place around 10:30 p.m.

Alex Gregory Lynam, of Dunedin, was traveling southbound on Bayshore Boulevard on his 2008 ZLMI scooter when a 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis made a left turn at Baywood Drive North. The driver of the car, Shirley A. Gil, 73, of Dunedin, pulled out in front of the scooter to attempt her left turn. Police say this is when the two vehicles collided head-on, but at an angle.

Lynam suffered critical injuries including multiple fractures and a head injury, although he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Lynam was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg for medical treatment, but he died about one hour after the accident, just after 11:30 p.m.

The driver of the Marquis was not injured in the wreck, and police say she showed no signs of being impaired. However, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating this crash.

Our Sarasota accident attorneys at Mallard Perez are saddened to hear of this tragic accident, and would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Alex Gregory Lynam during this difficult time.

We would also like to remind drivers of passenger vehicles to be extra careful sharing the road with scooters. As summer time approaches, more and more scooters, motorcycles and bikes will be on the road. It is critical that drivers watch out for them, yield to them and share the road safely.
