Turn signals are put on a car to be used—to signal to other drivers if someone is going to change lanes or make a left or right hand turn. However, the laws concerning turn signals can be confusing for some to understand.

According to Florida Statute section 316.155, signals are required in the event any other vehicle may be affected by the car’s movement. Signals should be given continuously for 100 feet before turning left or right. Signals must be given before a driver stops or suddenly decreases the speed of the vehicle.

Because the law relates mainly to turning, many drivers have the misperception that they don’t have to use their signals when changing lanes. However, drivers do have to use their blinkers when the lane change may affect another vehicle.

As a Sarasota car crash lawyer, I encourage all drivers to signal their intentions before making a lane change or turn. Signaling intentions helps everyone on the road stay safer by minimizing traffic accidents.

If a driver’s failure to use his turn signals caused your Sarasota crash and injuries, you may have a right to financial compensation for your damages, medical bills, lost income and more.
